1. Engineering Design Central Concepts
Engineering design involves practical problem
solving, research, development, and
invention/innovation, and requires designing,
drawing, building, testing, and redesigning.
Students should demonstrate the ability to use
the engineering design process to solve a problem
or meet a challenge.
Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006
3
Standard 1.1
1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the
engineering design process identify the problem,
research the problem, develop possible solutions,
select the best possible solution(s), construct
prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate,
communicate the solutions, and redesign.
Identify the problem
Research the problem
Redesign
Develop solutions
Communicate the solutions
Select the best solution
Test and evaluate
Construct a prototype

4
Step 1 Identify the problem
Student - Design, build and program a robot
to As seniors, we had to build an
obstacle course that robots could
navigate through, only constraints were that You
needed to know the power tools In the engineering
design area

Step 3 Develop solutions BRAINSTORM COLLABORATION
  • Student Share your ideas with your design team.
    List your ideas below.
  • Having a button open up a gate
  • Using an ultrasonic sensor to navigate through a
    series
  • of walls
  • Have the robot follow a line over a ramp then it
    hits
  • another button which activates something

Step 5 Construct a prototype
Build a robot with your NXT lego kit Create a
computer program for your robot.
Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of
your prototypes and computer programs.

7
Step 5 evidence
1st Prototype picture and computer program
8
Step 6 Test and Evaluate the solution(s)
  • Does your robot work?
  • Did it perform as expected?
  • What changes are necessary for the robot and the
    program?
  • Does it meet the original design constraints?
  • Is it safe?
  • Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the
    next slide to post
  • a picture of your improved robot project.

Redesign
Overhaul the solution(s) based on information
gathered during testing and self-assessment
activity.

12
Demonstrate the ability to use technology
for research, critical thinking, problem solving,
decision making, communication, collaboration,
creativity, and innovation.
