1
ECOLOGYChapter 23.1
  • Nutrition Energy Flow

2
How do organisms obtain energy?
  • Autotrophs-
  • -Organisms that use energy from the sun or
energy stored in chemical compounds to
    manufacture their own nutrients.
  • Heterotrophs-
  • -Organisms that cannot make their own food and
    must feed on other organisms.

3
You are what you eat
  • Scavengers --- Animals that eat other animals who
    have already died.
  • Decomposers--- Organisms that break down and
    absorb nutrients from dead organisms.
  • Herbivore --- Eats only plants
  • Carnivore --- Eats only meat (Carne)
  • Omnivore --- Eats both plants and meat

4
Matter Energy Flow
  • Food Chain-
  • -simple model biologist use to show how energy
and matter move through an ecosystem.

5
  • Trophic Level-
  • -a feeding step in the passage of energy and
    materials.
  • 10 Law Only 1/10 of energy at lower level is
    passed on.

6
  • Food Web-
  • -model which expresses all feeding relationships
at each trophic level in a community.

7
Cycles in Nature
  • Water Cycle-
  • -Life on Earth depends on water. The cycle is
how water is moving from the atmosphere to the
    Earth.

8
  • Carbon Cycle-
  • -Life on Earth needs carbon molecules for
sugars, fats, proteins. The cycle is how
    carbon moves through an ecosystem.

9
  • Nitrogen Cycle-
  • -How nitrogen gets used by the plants in the
ecosystems. Nitrogen is important to living
    organisms.
