Types of Ceiling Rose

• Roses come in a variety of shapes and sizes
• They can be split into three categories...
• Solid cast
• Vented cast
• And Sectional cast

Solid Cast Ceiling Rose

• As its name suggests this type of ceiling rose is
  a whole casting with no gaps between enrichments

Vented Ceiling Rose

• This cast is so named because of the gaps or
  vents between its enrichments

Sectional Ceiling Rose

• This type of rose is made up of many individual
  casts
• The rose opposite is made up of 42 individual
  detailed castings

Victorian Influence

• The ceiling rose came into its own during the
  Victorian period
• The Victorians were highly influenced by
  classical orders of architecture
• Greek and Roman
• Especially the Corinthian style

  easily recognised

Casting a ceiling rose

• Materials, Equipment and Process

Materials required

• Before we continue see if you can make your own
  list of materials
• Fine casting plaster (Plaster of Paris)
• Retarder (decelerate setting process)
• Hessian scrim (reinforce the cast)
• Cotton scrim (reinforcement)
• Timber lathes (reinforcement)
• Oil or Grease (lubrication)

Equipment required

• Make a list of the equipment you think is
  required
• Good quality P.V.C, Latex or plain plastic mould
• Mixing bowls
• Splash brush
• Buckets (for cleaning)
• Rule (for striking off)
• Gloves
• Dust mask

The casting process

• First we must ensure that our equipment is clean
  and in good order
• Then lightly oil the mould
• This will help in the release of the finished cast

P.P.E.

• Before we begin to mix we must ensure that we are
  wearing the correct P.P.E
• Dust mask and gloves
• Plaster dust if inhaled can cause breathing
  problems
• Contact with the skin on a regular basis can
  cause dermatitis

Mixing the plaster

• The first mix is called the firstings
• Add a pinch of retarder to the water
• Now add the casting plaster
• Leave for approximately one minute before mixing

The first pour

• Make sure the mould is on a flat even surface
• Pour the mix into the deepest parts of the mould
• Gently agitate the mould

Re-enforcing the mould

• Moulds of a regular depth and size can be
  re-enforced using hessian or cotton scrim
• Larger deeper moulds require timber lathes as
  support

The second pour

• When the reinforcing material is in place gently
  pour over a second mix
• Strike off any excess mix from the top of the
  mould
• As the plaster sets it will give off heat
• Catalytic reaction (chemical reaction)

The finished rose

• When the cast has cooled down it is ready to be
  turned out
• 30-40 minutes
