The Legend of Arethusa

• Arethusa was a naiad (a water nymph) who
  frolicked in the vicinity of Olympia. 
• The River God Alpheus fell in love with her, as
  she bathed in his stream. Alpheus pursued her,
  and she fled to Ortygia.
• There, she appealed for assistance from Artemis,
  goddess of the moon and the huntand the protector
  of women.

To protect Arethusa from Alpheus'
advances,Artemis transformed Arethusa into an
underground stream, emerging as a freshwater
spring fountain on the Sicilian island of
Ortygia. Undaunted, Alpheus rerouted his
river's flowunderground to follow Arethusa. Both
of their waters now mingle eternally in the
Fountain of Arethusa in Ortygia. Thus Alpheus
was able to be united, finally and forever,with
