  • Gerunds

Gerunds
  • Verbal phrases (words that are usually verbs)
    acting as NOUNS
  • Can be subject, object of a preposition, direct
    object, indirect object, or predicate nominative

Gerunds
  • Always end in ing
  • Can NOT be taken out of the sentence and still
    have the sentence make sense.
  • Ex Tim Berners-Lee is known for inventing the
    World Wide Web.
  • Object of the prep (for)

BE CAREFUL!
  • Participial phrases also end in ING
  • You must try to take it out to see which type of
    phrase it is
  • When the gerund is the object of the prep, you do
    not take out the prep
  • Ex The driver got out of the ticket by crying
    violently.
  • Do not take out by, so its not a complete
    sentence without the phrase gerund!
