• Bloodiest battle of the war
• Brits. won

New York

• New York was a loyalist stronghold
• Brit. Gen. William Howe and his brother, Admiral
  Richard Howe combined to take over all of NYC
• 32,000 Brit. troops
• including German mercenaries (Hessians)
• Wash. tried to keep NYC, but was pushed back into
  P.A. across the Delaware River

• Wash. was losing his army
• Many deserted or were killed or captured
• 8,000 men left in Fall of 76
• Needed a victory

Trenton

• December 25, 1776
• Wash. attempted a daring attack on Trenton, NJ
• Hessian stronghold
• Had to cross the Delaware at night
• 2,400 Americans attacked Trenton

• Hessians were drunk or hung-over from X-mas
  celebrations
• 30 killed
• including commander
• 918 captured
• Continental Army also won at nearby Princeton 8
  days later

• American capitol
• Gen. Howe wanted to capture the colonies largest
  city
• Wash. tried to hold the city, but was outgunned
• Brits. used troops and the navy
• Continental Congress had to flee

Saratoga

• Brit. Gen. John Burgoyne tried an offensive from
  Canada
• 5,000 troops
• Gen. Horatio Gates commanded Northern Dept. of
  Continental Army

Saratoga cont.

• Gates used minutemen and continentals and
  non-traditional tactics to wear Burgoyne down
• Harassed Burgoyne as he moved through Vermont and
  northern New York State

• Burgoyne was forced to surrender at Saratoga
• Oct. 17, 1777
• Brits. were forced to stick to original battle
  strategy
• Attack from the eastern coastline

• This was the turning point of the war
• French came in on American side

• Winter of 77-78
• Brits. held all of the major cities in the
  colonies
• Wash. had to camp in Valley Forge, PA for the
  winter
• Poor shelters, low supplies
• 10,000 suffered through the winter
• 2,000 died
