23Congestion?Tales from SLCThere was a
Transportation Guide that was widely
distributed, which basically told almost
everything that you would need to know to get
around during the gamesThere were park n
rides to park your car, and take public transit
up to the venue...thus cutting down the number of
vehicles.
24- Congestion? Cont.
- There was a fair amount of warning to the
locals about the possible problems...and I think
that it worked, because many people didn't leave
their homes unless they really had to. - I think that many people at the end of it all
said, Gosh, where was all of the traffic and
congestion that they talked about? I feel that
many people were upset because it wasn't all that
bad...like they had been duped into staying
home.
25Congestion
- What does it cost the region during the Olympics?
- What would need to be done to lesson it?
26Transit
- What infrastructure improvements would need to be
made? - What resources would be needed to augment our
current transit system? - How do you expand a transit system to handle an
influx of visitors, but make it sustainable for
when the crowds leave? - Will travel behavior adopted during the Olympics
remain?
27Atlanta Travel Behavior
- Even in a city like Atlanta, where the auto is
king, people will make short-term adjustments in
their travel patterns. But I would be very
surprised if there were any long-term effectsin
terms of bus and subway ridershipI dont see a
major lasting impact. - Michael Meyer, Director of the Transportation
Research and Education Center at Georgia Tech.
28Urban Revitalization
- What should we concentrate on?
- How do we make our expectations a reality?
- How do we deal with gentrification issues?
- Lessons learned from Atlanta
29- The games would uplift the people
- of Atlanta and fight poverty in the
- process.
- Maynard Jackson, Atlanta Mayor
30- Perhaps it was unrealistic to expect that an
event like the Olympics would motivate people to
tackle deeply embedded social ills. - Steven
French and Mike Disher
