How do Conjunctions function?
  • Conjunctions link words, phrases, or clauses.

Independent Clauses
  • Stand alone
  • Express a complete thought
  • Example Jade bought cookies for the class.
  • Example Tom ate the last cookie.
  • Which Sentence expresses a complete thought and
    stands alone?
  • After the rain.
  • The dog barked at the intruders.

Dependent Clauses
  • Cannot stand alone
  • Express an incomplete thought.
  • Example Although the sun is shinning,
  • Example Because we began studying early,
  • Which sentence is an example an a dependent
    clause?
  • While the children are here.

  • When Coordinating Conjunctions combine two
    elements, the elements becomes compound elements.

  • The orchestra rehearses on Tuesday, but the
    chorus rehearses on Wednesday.
  • Have you seen or heard the opera by Scott Joplin?
  • I wanted to sit in the front of the balcony so I
    ordered my tickets early.
