Title: NoLo: No Long-haul provider

2
Motivation
  • Location of 802.11 Base Stations in Wireless Only
    MAN
  • Use node as router w/ p2p link to next zone
  • Mechanism to allocate node as inter-zone route
  • Use shadows (not shadow pricing)
  • Performance Evaluation

3
Base Station Location
  • Like BT Consume.Net
  • Hot Spot
  • Look at prop. Near Hot Spot
  • Look at dual home clients

4
2 level network
  • Let base stations fight out freq alloc
  • Alloc a client node to be router (I.e. not ad hoc
    802.11?
  • Client has to be multihomed
  • Work (in ietf) to do base station selection
    consciously/informed

5
Need Router Designation/Discovery
  • Build Ad Hoc IP level
  • Use multicast a LOT?
  • Client multicast to find router
  • Router multicast advert
  • Designation/election protocoluse 802.1d
    style(spanning tree?

6
Leapfrog hopping from pond to pond
Leapfrog Routing Client Node
7
Shadows
  • London has a nice skyline
  • Fractal
  • Use it.
  • Place hot spots high up as well as low
  • collaborating/Cooperating nodes might
    subscribe high and low
  • Need to look at thisNode needs to state (or
    measure) likely scope

8
Eval
  • Use top, middle and bottom of buildings
  • Have RF propagation model for buildings
  • Have surface model for ISM band
  • Have consume.net basestation locations (note they
and BT use wireline net to connect)

9
Conclusions
  • NoLo
  • Not exactly MANET
  • Router Election based on Likelihood of movement!
(less likely to move, more able to route)
  • Nothing to stop one removing base stations later
  • Assuming MOST cells have basestation (not quite
    mainstream for project!)
  • Future work
  • Perf Eval
