2)Transportation Routes
  • Need to be located near transportation routes
  • Pre 1800s located near water
  • Post 1800s located near roads and rail lines

3)Government Policy
  • Govt planned how, where and when settlement
    occurred
  • A set of rules was developed to control these
things known as a SURVEY SYSTEM (pattern used by
the govt to divide the land)

Rural Settlements
  • 1. Long-lots of Southern Quebec
  • Long narrow lots extending back from major rivers
  • Southern QB settled long before development of
    roads
  • At the time, rivers were only source of
transportation so everyone had to have access to
water, the result was small water frontage along
    St. Lawrence River
  • Farm houses could be close together for protection

2. Concession system in Southern Ontario
  • In Ontario the land was divided up into a grid
system placed over the landscape (approx. 2kms
    apart)
  • Roads running East/West and North/South divided
    the land
  • Group of concession blocks called a township,

3. Section System of the Prairies
  • A huge grid was placed over portions of the
Prairies (9.6 km by 9.6 km)
  • Each block was then further divided into 25
    sections
  • Each of the 25 sections was divided into
    quadrants (NE, SE, SW, NW)
  • Each quadrant became a farm
