  • Heretics faced trail and jail or death

Christians fight Moors
  • Late 900s Muslim power had weakened
  • 1002 Muslim government fell
  • Reconquista- Christian efforts to retake Spain
    from the Moors

  • Inspired other Christian kingdoms
  • Aragon and Portugal
  • Christians won victory after victory
  • By the 1250s, Christian armies had pushed the
    Moors out of Europe

Rise of Portugal and Spain
  • Victorious over the Moors, Portugal and Spain
    grew stronger
  • Portugal became independent
  • Aragon and Castile united Spain
  • King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella
  • 1492 conquered Granada
  • Wanted to make Spain an all Catholic country
  • Required all Jews to convert to Christianity
  • Few years later banned Islam
  • ALL of Spain is Christian

  • An organization of priests that looked for and
    punished anyone in Spain suspected of secretly
    practicing their old religion.
  • Heretics, Jews, Muslims
  • Later spread to Portugal
  • Total people punished
  • Spain 2,000 died
  • Portugal 1,400 died
