Title: The Nervous System

1
The Nervous System
  • Mr. Koch
  • AP Psychology
  • Forest Lake High School

2
The Nervous System
  • Central Nervous System (CNS)
  • Includes all neurons in brain and spinal cord
  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
  • Neurons (sensory and motor) that run to and from
    CNS
  • Connects fingers, toes, etc. to spinal cord

3
The Nervous System
  • These systems work as connecting and coordinating
systems b/w the sense organs, muscles and glands

4
The Nervous System
  • Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
  • Transmits stimuli from your senses to CNS and
    from CNS to muscles
  • Example feel a hot stove and pull hand away
  • Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
  • (automatic)
  • Regulates activities of vital organs
  • Lungs, stomach, intestines, heart liver,
    eliminative organs, and reproductive organs
  • We usually cannot voluntarily control these
    activities
  • Exceptions hold breath, control blood pressure,
    blinking, sneezing

5
The Nervous System
  • 2 divisions of the ANS
  • Sympathetic Nervous System
  • Arouses us for defensive action mobilizes
    energy
  • (? heartbeat, ? digestion, ? blood sugar)
  • fight or flight response
  • Parasympathetic Nervous System
  • Calms us down conserves energy
  • (? heartbeat, ? blood sugar, etc.)

The Nervous System
  • Types of Neurons
  • (neuron nerve cell)
  • Sensory (afferent) neurons
  • Takes info up to brain
  • (sense, intake)
  • Interneurons
  • Processes information
  • (turnstile)
  • Motor (efferent) neurons
  • Controls the physical, motor response muscle
    skills
  • (movement, out)

What happened? Perception? What should we do
about it?
