Title: Today

1
Todays Agenda
  • Bellringer Compare mixtures and compounds.
  • Review Reading Guide from Yesterday
  • Organic Compounds

2
Organic Compounds
  • Science 7
  • Study Pack 2

3
Todays target
  • I can explain the role of organic compounds in
    the human body.

4
Questions to ponder
  • Why do we need food?
  • Why do we need different kinds of food?
  • What happens to foods once we eat them?
  • How does eating help us grow?

5
Yesterday
  • Section reviewpage 253 1-4

6
A Growing Body
  • Our body needs these organic compounds to grow
    and develop
  • Where do we get the additional compounds in order
to grow larger and become more complex?
  • Food and nutrients taken in and broken down by
the body become the building blocks needed to
    help us grow

7
Getting Additional Building Blocks
  • Where do we get carbohydrates?
  • Sugars and starches found in foods like potatoes,
    noodles, rice, and bread.
  • What does the body use them for?
  • Your body breaks them down to produce energy for
    your cells
  • They also make up some cell parts, like the cell
walls in plants and cell membranes

8
Getting Additional Building Blocks
  • Where do we get proteins?
  • Foods like meat, eggs, fish, nuts, and beans
  • What does the body use them for?
  • Proteins form parts of the cell membrane
  • They also make up many organelles
  • Certain cells use proteins to make body parts
    such as hair

9
Getting Additional Building Blocks
  • Where do we get lipids?
  • Lipids are found in foods that come from animals
    like meat, cheese, and eggs
  • What does your body use them for?
  • Cells store energy in lipids for later use
  • Why might you gain weight if you eat to large
    amounts of foods containing lipids?

10
Getting Additional Building Blocks
  • Where do we get nucleic acids?
  • Passed from parent to child
  • What does your body use them for?
  • DNA directs all the cells functions
  • RNA plays an important role in making proteins
    for the body
