• Split Indian subcontinent into two separate and
  independent nations
• India (mainly Hindus)
• East and West Pakistan (Muslims)
• 15 million people migrated
• Many Muslims left India for Pakistan
• Many Hindus left Pakistan for India

• Gandhi was assassinated by a fellow Hindu who
  thought he betrayed his own people
• East Pakistan declared independence from West
  Pakistan
• Now Bangladesh
• India and Pakistan have fought 2 wars
• They still have disputes over Kashmir
• (region in the north)
• Both have nuclear weapons!
