4Concept Art
- Concept artists develop the Directors vision
into sketches and production art. Many of the
designs produced during preproduction become
explorations into ideas that will never make it
into production
5Concept Art
During the early stages of preproduction artists
create concept art as inspiration for the mood
and tone of the project. In addition to visual
information early concept art describes the size
and scope of the project.
6Character Design
- During the character design stage of visual
development, the main characters and refined from
rough concepts into specific characters with
physical and emotional attributes.
Shrek was created by William Steig, a cartoon
artist who is well known for his work in the New
Yorker.
7Character DesignColor Materials
In addition to designing the shape and physical
size ,concept artists define the color and
material properties of characters and props
during visual development
8Character DesignVisual Effects For Feature Film
9Character Design
In addition defining the physical attributes of a
character, concept artist flesh out character
mood and emotions. If the character changes
during the script the character art must reflect
those changes.
10Vehicle Design
Concept art for vehicle design can cover any
thing from rough suggestive sketches to
construction drawings with specific dimensions
and details
11Environment Design
Concept artist will create concept art for
environments under strict direction from the art
director. Environment design will directly
influence any characters or props that are put
into the scene in addition to the type of
lighting that will be used during shot production.
12Environment Design
Concept art for environments can be direct
reference for materials and modeling, or it can
be used to simply suggest mood and atmosphere
13Key Art
- A Concept artist will create key art or what is
sometimes called a color key to define the color
mood for a specific sequence or environment.
Key art can be also be used to describe position
and intensity of lights in the scene.
14Color Script
The color script is designed to establish the
color and mood throughout the entire run of the
timeline. Lighting and compositing artist will
use the color script as a guide to help reinforce
the story though lighting
15Research Development
- New projects can require new technology and
techniques that need to be research and developed
by the RD team before they can be implemented
into the current pipeline. This process can in
progress even before preproduction has started
16Pipeline Test
- Once Visual Development is nearing completion the
project is put through the studio pipeline to
find where the pipeline needs to be modified to
efficiently handle to the specific needs of the
project. Pipeline tests can also determine if
certain requirements of the project are not going
be possible, and must be modified before
production can begin.
