Title: Quiet Steel

2 Overview
- Quiet Steel(TM), a patented multi-layer
laminate from Material Sciences Corporation
(MSC), replaces the standard steel in vehicle
body structures while simultaneously providing a
significant reduction in vehicle sound and
vibration levels.
An engineered viscoelastic polymer core
sandwiched between two cold-rolled layers of
steel. The viscoelastic layer is a "tunable"
formulation, allowing vehicle designers to
attenuate specific frequencies depending on where
in the vehicle they use Quiet Steel(TM).
3 Advantages
- Reduce vehicle costsReduce mass Improve NVH
performance Improve quality Reduce build
variation Streamline assembly - Can be electrogalvanized for corrosion protection
- 100 can be easily recycled
4 Applications
- First debuted as a dashboard for the 2003
Cadillac. - Currently used at GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler
for a variety of brake, powertrain, and body
structure applications.
5The dramatic reductions in noise and vibration in
sheet metal panels made from Quiet Steel are due
to the very high levels of damping inherent in
the material. The effect of damping is to reduce
the vibration amplitude of a system which is
being excited at, or near its resonant frequency.
Since it is the vibration of a panel that
generates radiated noise, the reduction in
vibration amplitude due to damping directly leads
to reduced noise radiated from the panel.
6A typical sheet metal panel has many resonances
and the resulting vibration response has many
peaks at these resonances. The effect of Quiet
Steel on a typical steel panel is dramatic as can
be seen above
