Title: Walking by the Spirit

1
Walking by the Spirit
  • Galatians 516-25
  • Grasping the Essentials of
  • Biblical Christian Living

2
The Question
  • How are we to live
  • under the New Covenant?

3
Walking by the Spirit
  • Gal 516-17 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and
you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh for these are
in opposition to one another, so that you may not
do the things that you please.

4
The Deeds of the Flesh
  • Galatians 518-21 But if you are led by the
Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds
of the flesh are evident, which are immorality,
    impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery,
enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger,
    disputes, dissensions, factions, envying,
drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of
which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned
you, that those who practice such things will not
    inherit the kingdom of God.

5
The Fruit of the Spirit
  • Galatians 522-23
  • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
    patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
    gentleness, self-control against such things
    there is no law.

6
Crucified and Raised
  • Gal 524-25 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also
    walk by the Spirit.

7
Summary
  • Live your life by the Spirit of God and you will
not practice the works of sin but rather grow in
the righteous fruit of Gods purifying power.

8
An Essential Question
  • How do we Walk by the Spirit?

9
The Partakers of the New Covenant
  • Acts 233 Therefore having been exalted to the
right hand of God, and having received from the
Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has
poured forth this which you both see and hear.
  • Acts 241-42So then, those who had received his
word were baptized and that day there were added
about three thousand souls. Acts 242 They were
continually devoting themselves to the apostles'
teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of
    bread and to prayer.

10
The Spiritual Endeavors
  • The Word of God
  • Prayer
  • Fellowship (Baptism and the Lords Supper)

11
Confirming Evidence Colossians
  • Col 315 Let the peace of Christ rule in your
hearts, to which indeed you were called in one
    body and be thankful.
  • Col 316 Let the word of Christ richly dwell
within you, with all wisdom teaching and
admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in
    your hearts to God.
  • Col 42 Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping
alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving

12
Confirming Evidence Hebrews
  • Heb 416 Therefore let us draw near with
confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of
    need.
  • Heb 513-61 For everyone who partakes only of
milk is not accustomed to the word of
righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid
food is for the mature, who because of practice
have their senses trained to discern good and
evil. Therefore leaving the elementary teaching
about the Christ, let us press on to maturity.
  • Heb 1024-25 and let us consider how to stimulate
one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking
our own assembling together, as is the habit of
some, but encouraging one another and all the
more as you see the day drawing near.

13
Continuing in the Gospel Not Moving Away from
the Gospel
  • These Spiritual Endeavors are
  • Built on the Word of God
  • Inaugurated and Engaged in by the Spirit
  • Eternal in Nature

14
Let Us Not Depart
  • Hebrews 21-3 For this reason we must pay much
closer attention to what we have heard, so that
we do not drift away from it.  For if the word
spoken through angels proved unalterable, and
every transgression and disobedience received a
just, penalty, how will we escape if we neglect
    so great a salvation?

15
Keep Fixed on the King
  • John 539-40 You diligently study the Scriptures
because you think that by them you possess
eternal life. These are the Scriptures that
testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to
    have life.
