- Depression is a treatable physical illness
- Over 90 of cases can be successfully treated
- Need to see a doctor or psychiatrist for
diagnosis and treatment

- Most people who die by suicide have a brain
illness (e.g., depression, schizophrenia,
substance abuse) at the time of death.

- However, most people with a brain illness do not
die by suicide.
1120-25 million people in the U.S. suffer from
depression each year.
36,000 people in the U.S. die from suicide each
year.

- Suicidal people give Warning Signs to various
people in their lives

- Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself.
- Looking for a way to kill oneself, such as
searching online or buying a gun. - Talking about feeling hopeless or having no
reason to live. Talking about feeling trapped or
in unbearable pain. - Talking about being a burden to others.
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
- Acting anxious or agitated behaving recklessly.
- Sleeping too little or too much.
- Withdrawing or feeling isolated.
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.
- Displaying extreme mood swings.
