- Choose a topic
- Year Round School FOR or AGAINST
- Laptops for All Students FOR or AGAINST
- Raising your allowance FOR or AGAINST
- Consider your audience while you brainstorm your
reason to support your side - Create a T-Chart and list all reasons for or
against.
2T-CHARTor a Venn Diagram
- List all possible reasons that could support or
be FOR this side of the argument.
- List all possible objections or reasons that
could support this side of the argument.
You must try to think of all the reasons for or
against your topic. When you begin to write, you
need to take the opposing view into consideration
and use a dependent clause OPENER like while,
although, as, when, etc in at least ONE
sentence in every paragraph. Example Although
some people think traffic cameras help keep
intersections safe, the reality is that they
often cause drivers to slam on their brakes to
avoid a ticket, which causes rear-end crashes to
increase.
3Position/Opinion
- In persuasive writing, a writer takes a position
FOR or AGAINST an issue and writes to convince
the reader to believe or do something.
4Thesis Statement Paragraph Topic Sentence
Position, Claim, Opinion STATEMENT
- There are three objectives of a thesis statement
- It tells the reader the specific topic of your
paragraph and/or essay. - It imposes manageable limits on that topic.
- It suggests the organization of your paper.

- Sports tone up students bodies and also their
minds. - Middle school and high school students need
school issued laptops to help raise their
academic performance. - Middle schools need to offer more enrichment
classes like robotics, drama, and home economics.

- State your opinion about your topic and briefly
list your three (3) reasons - Reason

so that they can communicate with their parents

6Thesis Opinion/PositionConcluding Sentence
- They are very related!
- After you finish writing all of your reasons with
examples and/or facts to support them, you need
to let the reader know that you are finished
proving your point. - Concluding sentences simply RESTATE the thesis
using different wording.
