Title: Progression in Learning to Tell the Time
1Progression in Learning to Tell the Time
2Stage 1 Recognising hours
Children should be taught to read the oclock
times first on both digital and analogue clocks.
3Stage 2 Reading quarter and half hours
At this stage, children should learn to read
half-past, quarter-past and quarter-to the hour.
Again both digital and analogue clocks should be
used.
4Stage 3 Five minute intervals
Children should learn to read all the five minute
intervals using the correct language for both
digital and analogue clocks. The five minute
intervals past will be introduced first
followed by the five minutes to. Many children
will need to spend a great deal of time on this
stage.
The time is eight thirty five!
The time is Twenty-five to nine!
5Stage 4 One minute intervals
Children should learn to read all the one minute
intervals using the correct language for both
digital and analogue clocks. Initially children
need to use clocks which have all the one-minute
intervals marked. Later on they will learn to
read analogue clocks marked in five-minute
intervals.
The time is one-eleven!
The time is 13 minutes past eleven!
6Stage 5 24 hour clock
The final stage is to introduce children to the
24 hour clock. Children need to know that the 24
hour clock should always have 4 digits.
At least I will be able to sleep on the train!
The next train to London leaves at zero one
hundred hours.
