Drawing Scale
  • construction projects are drawn to a reduced
    scale
  • scale is defined as
  • architectural scale
  • 1/4 1-0 this means ever 1/4 on the drawing
equals a one foot of actual length on the project
  • 1/8 1-0
  • engineering scale
  • 1 10, or 20 etc.
  • metric scale
  • 150

Reading Scales

7
Quantity Takeoffs
  • Quantities derived from drawings
  • Square footage, linear footage, etc..
  • List of all materials (Quantity amount), as well
    as equipment and labor costs.
  • Accurate quantity takeoffs are required for
    detailed cost estimates.

8
Blueprint View Types
  • Plan Views
  • Orthographic/Perspective
  • Detail Views
  • Contour/Topographic Views
  • Cross-sections
  • Profiles
  • Plot Plans

9
Plot Plans(Site Plans)
  • View from above the property that illustrates
location of building on the lot.
  • Lot and block number or address
  • Bearing and length of property lines
  • North arrow
  • Dimensions of front, rear and side yards.
  • Location of other accessory buildings
  • Location of walks, drives, fences, etc
  • Location of Utilities, and easement setbacks
  • Elevations at various locations

10
Divisions
  • 1 General
  • 2 Sitework
  • 3 Concrete
  • 4 Masonry
  • 5 Metals
  • 6 Wood Plastics
  • 7 Thermal Moisture Protection
  • 8 Doors Windows
  • 9 Finishes
  • 10 Specialties
  • 11 Equipment
  • 12 Furnishings
  • 13 Special Construction
  • 14 Conveying Systems
  • 15 Mechanical
  • 16 - Electrical

11
Concrete
  • Reinforced Concrete
  • Contains rebar and/or welded wire fabric to
    increase tensile strength
  • Pre-cast (in factory) or cast in place (on site)
  • Pre-stressed Concrete
  • Pre-tensioned
  • Post-tensioned
  • Steel and concrete compliment one another

12
Commercial Framing
  • Framework constructed of structural steel and/or
    reinforced concrete.
  • Framework is designed to transfer loads to
columns of steel, thus eliminating the need for
    load bearing walls.
  • Two types of floor and roof framing systems.
  • One-way floor system (Girders run parallel to
    each other)
  • Two-way floor system (Beams and girders run in
    both directions)

13
Reinforced Concretefloor systems - one way
14
Reinforced Concretefloor systems - two way waffle
15
Residential Framing
  • Similar to commercial framing
  • Beams and joists used to support floors
  • Wood members used instead of structural steel and
    concrete.
  • More members used in residential frames (weaker
    material and no large columns.)
  • Weight of floor supported by wall instead of
    columns.

16
Residential Framing
  • Wall framing types
  • Platform
  • Balloon
  • Plank and Beam
  • Be familiar with members used in
  • Flooring
  • Walls
  • Roofing
  • Stairs
