Glacier Terms
2
Alpine vs. valley Glaciers
  • Glacier A large mass of compacted snow and ice
that moves under the force of gravity
  • Alpine (Valley) Glaciers A glacier that moves
    within valley walls
  • Continental glacier a glacier that covers a
    large part of a continent

3
Glacial Polish
  • Bedrock surface smoothed by the passage of a
    glacier

4
Striations
  • Parallel scratches on the surface of a rock
caused by the movement of a glacier- aligned in
the same direction as ice flow (ex. if the
striation runs north to south, the glacier went
    from north to south)

5
Drumlins
  • Oval-shaped mound of unsorted glacial till- The
round end of the hill faces the direction that
    the glacier came from

6
MORAINE
  • Irregular, hilly, unsorted deposit formed at the
end of an advancing glacier when the melting ice
front stays at the same position for a long time
    (ex. Long Island)

7
Kettles/Kettle Lake
  • Low spots in glacial deposits and places where
large, buried ice blocks melt- leaves a hole
  • Kettle Lakes are when the holes fill in with water

8
Erratics
  • A large boulder dropped by ice

9
Esker
  • A ridge made by water deposition within a tunnel
    under the ice

10
Kame
  • Deltas deposited by the water at the edge of a
    glacier

11
In Notes Valley Shape
  • Young riVers make V-shaped valleys
  • Alpine glaciers make U-shaped valleys

12
Visualizations
  • Seasonal Migration of Snow
  • Observe the retreat of ice sheets from North
    America.
  • Observe how glaciers erode bedrock surfaces.
