Title: Introduction to Engineering and Technology Concepts

1
Introduction to Engineering and Technology
Concepts
  • Unit Three
  • Chapter Three Using Energy

2
Instructions for Success
  • Each chapter of every unit will begin with a
Mindjog. This is a warm up question that you
should answer in your workbook in the proper
    chapter.
  • Please take notes as you move through the
presentations in the notebook that has been
    provided.
  • Sections will come up in each presentation with
an assignment notice. Turn to the section
detailed on the slide in your workbook and
    complete the assignment before proceeding.
  • Good luck!

3
Objective
  • Students will define the types of motion gained
    by using energy.

4
Mindjog!
  • On your worksheet, please respond to the
    following question
  • Think of a piece of technology that you use
everyday. Now list the ways in which energy is
used to make the artifact work for you.

5
Quick Review
  • In the past two chapters, we have defined energy
as the ability to do work.
  • We have defined work as applying a force that
moves a mass a distance in the direction of an
    applied force.
  • Work always involves moving a load (Wright,
    2004).

6
Types of Motion
  • When using energy to do work, motion is always
    present.
  • The three important types of motion include
rotary motion, linear motion, and reciprocating
    motion.
  • Rotary Motion spinning around on an axis
  • Linear Motion moving in a straight line
  • Reciprocating Motion moving back and forth
    (Wright, 2004).

7
Two Types of Systems
  • There are two basic types of systems dedicated to
change the type, direction, or speed of a force.
  • They are Mechanical Power and Fluid Power Systems
    (Wright, 2004)

8
Mechanical Power Systems
  • Mechanical systems use moving parts to transfer
    the motion.
  • It is the oldest method of transferring energy.
  • There are six common techniques lever, crank,
gears, cam, gear and rack, pulleys and V-belt
    (Wright, 2004).

9
Mechanical Power Systems (continued)
  • Lever- a device that changes the direction of a
    linear force.
  • Crank a pivot point near the outside edge of a
wheel or disk that changes reciprocating motion
    in to rotating motion.
  • Gears Two or more wheels with teeth on their
circumference that change the direction of a
    rotating force.
  • Cam A pear-shaped disk with an of center pivot
point that is used to change rotating motion into
    reciprocating motion.
  • Gear and rack rotating gear meshes with a bar
that has gear teeth along its length that changes
    rotating motion into linear motion.
  • Pulleys and V-Belt two pulleys with a V-belt
stretched between them that change the speed or
power of a motion (Wright, 2004).

10
Fluid Power Systems
  • Fluid Power Systems use either liquids or gases
to transfer power from one place to another
    (Wright, 2004).
  • Systems that use air are called pneumatic
    systems.
  • Liquids are used in hydraulic systems (Wright,
    2004).

11
Assignment 1
  • Please turn to the section in your workbook
entitled, Unit Three, Chapter Three Using
    Energy.
  • Complete the extension questions under the
Assignment 1 header before moving onto the
    next section of slides.

12
BEFORE MOVING ON
  • Did you complete the Assignment 1 Section
under the Unit Three, Chapter Three Using
    Energy section of your workbook?
  • If you have, please proceed to the next slide.

13
Unit Three Completed!
  • Please close this presentation and launch the
folder entitled, Unit 4, Chapter One.
