What is an article of the week?

• An AoW is a nonficiton relatively current article
  that will give you more real world experience
  with a wide variety of nonficiton texts, authors
  styles.

Why will we be doing AoWs?

• To help build your prior knowledge about the real
  world.
• To interact with text via reading strategy
  application.
• To critically think about real world issues.

What do I have to do with the article?

• You have to be honest with the article.
• Do a close read (annotation) of the article.
• Mark it up with
• Your opinion
• Your confusion
• Your questions

How do I do that?

• Interact with the text !!!

AoW - Step 1

• Read the article marking it up for anything that
  is confusing in any way.
• What the heck does that mean?
• Where the heck is that?
• Who the heck is that?
• What the heck is one of those?

AoW - Step 2

• Next, mark up the text with any/all of the
  READING STRATEGIES
• Where you highlighted confusion, clearly a
  question could be written.
• However, any of the reading strategies could be
  employed for each paragraph.

• Then, complete the Article of the Week worksheet
  that can be found at http//teacherweb.com/VA/scho
  ols/Henri/photo8.aspx . Make sure you also refer
  to the Article of the Week rubric that can also
  be found at the web page referenced above to
  review how you will be graded for this assignment.
