Literary Elements
  • Tone The attitude of the narrator towards the
    subject, ideas, theme or characters. It can be
    eerie, humorous, serious, threatening etc.
  • Mood The emotional quality or atmosphere of a
    story or poem.
  • Stanza A group of lines forming a unit in a
    poem. Together stanzas are the paragraphs of a
    poem.
  • Repetition (refrain) The reoccurrence of sound,
    words, phrases, lines, or stanzas in a speech or
    piece of writing. Repetition increases the
    feeling of unity in a work.
  • Visual Imagery Is the collection of details that
    writers use to help readers visualize scenes.
    Visual imagery makes writing come to life.

  • Any object, person, place, or experience that
    means more than what it is.
  • Foreshadowing
  • The use of clues by an author to prepare readers
    for an event that will happen in a story or poem.
  • Onomatopoeia
  • The use of a word or phrase that actually
    imitates or suggests the sound of what it
    describes.

  • the repetition of identical or similar sounds in
    the ends of words that appear close to one
    another in a poem
  • End Rhyme -rhyme that occurs at the ends of lines
  • Internal Rhyme -rhyme that occurs within a single
    line of poetry
  • Rhyme Scheme
  • Alliteration
  • the repetition of consonant sounds, most often at
    the beginning of words.
  • EX Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal dared to
    dream before

  • a figure of speech using like or as to compare
    two seemingly unlike things
  • Rhyme Scheme- the pattern formed by end rhyme in
    a poem. Shown by the used of a different letter
    of the alphabet to name each new rhyme.
  • Hyperbole- a figure speech that uses exaggeration
    to express strong emotion, make a point, or
    create humor.
  • Lyric Poetry- a verse or poem that can be sung.

  • Meter- a regular pattern of stressed and
    unstressed syllables that gives a line of poetry
    a predictable rhythm.
  • Theme- the main idea of a story, poem, novel, or
    play. Revealed gradually through other elements
    such as plot, character, setting, symbol, and
    irony
  • Speaker- the voice in a poem, similar to the
    narrator in a work of fiction. The speakers tone
    may communicate an attitude toward the subject of
    the poem
  • Characterization- the methods a writer uses to
    develop the personality of a character
