  • Develops along the Nile River (longest
  • river in the world).
  • Nile river empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Nile starts in Ethiopia (Lake Tana- Blue Nile)
  • and Uganda ( Lake Victoria-White Nile) in
  • the mountains and runs north.down hill.
  • Surrounded to the west and east by deserts
  • (Libyan, Nubian, Eastern).

Dependency on the Nile
  • Flooding provides a layer of fresh (silt) topsoil
    for growing crops.
  • Trapped water and dug canals for irrigation
    (watering crops).
  • The Nile was referred to as the giver and taker
    of life.

Innovations
  • Egyptian calendar had 365 days based on the sun.
  • Calendar divides the year into three seasons
    Inundation, Emergence, and Harvest.
  • Inundation was the time of flooding. It was a
    time for celebration. This was the time it is
    thought that the pyramids were worked on.
  • Emergence was a time when the waters were
    receding. This was a time for tilling and
    planting.
  • Harvest was a period of dry weather. Crops were
    cared for and harvested.

  • Egyptians created gods that had an

  1. Re sun god. Was reborn every morning. Idea of
    the afterlife.
  2. Osiris taught people how to farm. Helps things
    grow.

  • It is unknown who united Egypt. Some experts say
    it was Narmer. Legend says it was Menes.
  • Double crown worn shows uniting of the two Egypts

    organized government representing one group of
    people lasting 3000 years.
