  • As a group, come up with 5 important things that
    you learned about Persia and the Persian Empire.
    Did you cover
  • Persias wealth comes from copper, lead, silver,
    gold and other minerals.
  • Cyrus the Great and that he was a kind leader? He
    helped the Jews rebuild the temple.
  • Cambyses replaced his father Cyrus and did not
    rule with kindness. He had religious sites burnt
    which caused anger.
  • Cambyses was succeeded by Darius. He had to
    re-gain control of the empire by putting down the
    revolts, then he focused on Afghanistan then to
    India. He increased the size of the empire, but
    never conquered Greece

  • Darius was a great military leader, but he is
    better known for his ability to administer the
    empire.
  • We already discussed some issues with a large
    empire. What are some of the challenges?
  • Remaining in touch with all parts of the empire
  • Avoiding revolt while still enforcing laws
  • Trade

  • Darius he encouraged people to continue to
    practice their faith, also keep their language
    and customs. This was known as nationalities.
  • Each providence had a governor called a satrap.
    The governor enforced Dariuss rule.
  • To ensure his rule was being followed, he sent
    inspectors which were known as the Kings eyes
    ears.

  • To enable greater control and contact, the
    Persian Empire built roads. The most famous was
    called the Royal Road.
  • It went from Susa in Persia to Sardis in Anatoli,
    about 1,677 miles.
  • Darius also coined money which standardized
    currency. This ended weighing gold or silver or
    bartering.

  • Over 2500 years people dealt with war (lots of
    them!), famine and other disasters.
  • People began to question who and why there was so
    much chaos.
  • The Persian Prophet Zoroaster declared that earth
    was the battleground for good and bad spirits. He
    preached that the God Ahura Mazda.
  • His teachings are found in Judaism, Christianity
    Islam

  • Islam took control of Persia around 600 AD,
    (Cyrus took control around 530 BC).
  • The impact of the Persian Empire was overall
    positive. They brought order to southwest Asia.
  • The empire last about 200 years. When the leaders
    followed Cyruss tolerance, people generally
    brought peace and cooperation
