Robert Hooke

• A British scientist
• Build a microscope that allowed him to
• look at very tiny objects
• Sliced a very thin piece of cork and
• looked at it through his microscope

What did he see?

• He saw hundreds of little boxes or honeycomb.
• Named the boxes CELLS or little rooms in
  Latin.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek

• A fabric merchant
• Looked at pond scum.
• Discovered unicellular organisms.
• Named themanimacules or little animals.

Matthias Schleiden 1838

• A German scientist who studied cells.
• Concluded that all plant are made of cells

• A German scientist that studied cells.
• Concluded that animals are made of cells

Rudolf Virchow 1858

• German doctor
• Discovered that cells could not develop
• from anything but other cells.

• 1. All organisms are composed of one or
• more cells.
• 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and
  function in all living things. Example skin
  and nerve cells
• 3. All cells come from existing cells

• 1. they are surrounded by a cell membrane
• 2. They contain DNA (at some point)
