Learning Styles There is controversy about
the concept of learning styles. There is a
controversy of learning styles because there has
been no evidence that learning styles exist.
However, there is a preference of how one wants
to learn and in what mode. For example, in ETEC
544 some students chose to meet face-to-face and
some student chose the eLearning or online
section. Both classes are learning the same
content but the learning style is differentiated.
This statement sums up the controversy (Reiner
and Willingham), We shouldn't congratulate
ourselves for showing a video to engage the
visual learners or offering podcasts to the
auditory learners. Rather, we should realize
that the value of the video or audio will be
determined by how it suits the content that we
are asking students to learn and the background
knowledge, interests, and abilities that they
bring to it.

Learning StylesLearning Styles and
Instructional DesignDespite the controversy,
the instructional designer can take into account
the learning preferences of students to actively
engage them so that learning takes place. When
teachers can tailor lessons to fit the interests
of students, again, more students will learn
where there is an interest in a subject or topic.
Deciding on how to approach the material is key
and giving students options for producing a
product is key as well. Presentation and delivery
are crucial components and strategies in a
learning environment.

  • Motivation Motivation is the process
    that initiates, guides, and maintains
    goal-oriented behaviors. Motivation can be
described as why one does something or why one
    does not do something.
  • .

7
  • Motivation Persistence Model to continue
even though problems may exist. For example, I
have a heavy workload although I continue to give
it my best. I am determined to move forward
although I have encountered some setbacks.
Instructors can use persistence knowing that they
have created various models in getting students
    to succeed.

Blooms Taxonomy

  • Blooms Taxonomy
  • An instructional designer could various potential
activities and products as follows according to
    Blooms Taxonomy
  • Remember Make a list, create a timeline, make a
chart, recite a poem, make a chart.
  • Understand Explain in your own words, illustrate
the main idea, develop a storyboard, write a
    summary, chart sequence of events.
  • Apply Make a diorama, illustrate, take photos,
    classify and categorize objects.
  • Analyze Design a questionnaire to gather
information, conduct an investigation, make a
flowchart, make a family tree, compare contrast
realistic fictional stories, make an ad, put on a
    play.
  • Synthesize Create a story of your own, invent a
machine or task, sell an idea, compose a song.
  • Evaluate Make up a new language or code, compose
a melody and put words to it, write a play,
design a book or magazine cover.

Conclusion In summary the role of learning
theory, learning style, motivation and Blooms
Taxonomy for instructional design would be to
continue and build upon the foundations and
groundwork that has already been set forth for
educational leaders. Our role is to continue to
create instructional design that is meaningful to
our students. We should use an array of
strategies, learning styles, interests, and
ability levels to create various learning modes
that engage and capture the essence of learning.
