Title: Summary

1
Intermediate Instructor Certification Course
  • Purpose
  • Two-day course
  • Certifies Intermediate Instructors
  • Last step before Coach Certification
  • Can be taught by Community Coaches

2
Differences Between Basic Intermediate
Instructors
  • Basic Instructors normally run introductory
    archery classes
  • Both Basic and intermediate Instructors may
conduct small and large group instruction, but
Intermediate Instructors also focus on training
    other instructors
  • Intermediate Instructors are certified to train
    Basic Instructors
  • Intermediate Instructors must be members of USA
Archery or the NFAA for the certification to be
    effective
  • Intermediate Instructors must renew their
    recertification annually
  • Basic and Intermediate Instructors are certified
as instructors, not coaches, even though they may
    perform as coaches on occasion

3
Conduct of Intermediate Instructor Course
  • Train the trainer course
  • Learn by doing (hear it-see it-do it)
  • Relies on peer instruction and practice
  • Course leader acts as a guide and mentor rather
    than a lecturer
  • Instruction is based on Biomechanically Efficient
    Shooting Technique (B.E.S.T. Method)
  • Designed to teach Intermediate Instructors how to
  • train Basic Instructors to set up ranges
  • present basic archery training to entry level
    students

Agenda
Hand out agenda
Discuss the arrangement of classes
  • Welcome
  • Fill out all forms
  • Insure that candidates know they must join USA
    Archery or NFAA
  • Give pre-test (Basic Instructor Course Exam)
  • Those who dont pass the pre-test may not take
    the course

8
Agenda
  • Equipment orientation at the beginning
  • Doing this at the beginning insures that everyone
    is using same terminology
  • May use handouts or the manual while giving the
    equipment orientation

9
Agenda
  • Exercises (Day 1)
  • Coach walks candidates through the exercise
  • Candidates conduct round-robin practices of that
    exercise until they become proficient
  • Each subsequent exercise builds on the one before
  • By the end of the day the candidates are
    proficient in all exercises
  • Coach assigns instruction preparation assignments
to each of the candidates at end of day

10
Agenda
  • Exercises (Day 2)
  • Bow and Arrow Tuning is an overview not a
    detailed class
  • During peer teaching candidates teach the Basic
Instructor Certification Course to the group
  • Each candidate gives his/her instruction and the
class conducts a Basic Archery instructor
    Certification Course
  • Coach guides the presentations and makes
corrections by asking candidates to point
critique each other and point out areas of
    strength and weakness

11
Agenda
  • Archery Games and Training Exercises
  • Every game should be designed to teach a skill
    (grouping, hold-off drills)
  • This should be guided discussion
  • Coach mentions a skill and candidates think up
drills that will develop that skill

12
Agenda
  • Review for Final Exam
  • Answer questions that candidates have about
    instruction
  • Ask review questions that cover areas in which
    candidates have demonstrated weaknesses
  • Some candidates have test anxiety and will want
to keep asking questions to avoid the exam so you
must stop the session and give the test in a
    timely manner

13
Agenda
  • Graduation
  • After tests are graded call anyone aside who
didnt pass and explain the short comings to them
  • Review the test with the group so that everyone
    understands the correct answers
  • You may let the class grade the tests by handing
them to the person to the right or left
  • Summarize the instruction, give some words of
    encouragement and congratulate the graduates
  • Make sure that you get a Class Picture
