Title: Obama to discuss immigration reform

1
Obama to discuss immigration reform
2
The president is expected to highlight
immigration proposals in a speech this afternoon
in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he will not introduce
new legislation at this point in time. His
announcement today is coming under criticism from
Latino activists for failing to deliver on 2008
campaign promise to make immigration reform a
priority of his first term. Obama will press for
quick action on immigration reform which includes
a path to citizenship for 11 million illegal
immigrants. His speech is in response to a
bipartisan group of eight senators who laid out
their blueprint for immigration reform yesterday.
The White House may consider introducing its own
legislation should the Senate plan fall apart.

  • In a recent update to Google Maps, some of North
Korea is now visible. It has filled in the big,
largely blank space that previously lay north of
the well-mapped South Korea with streets, towns
and landmarks. Users curious to virtually explore
one of the world's most reclusive nations can
zoom into the heart of Pyongyang (the capital)
and pull up photographs of the Kumsusan Memorial
Palace, which houses the bodies of the revered
former leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. The
availability of photos quickly thins as users
scroll into the North Korean countryside and
dries up almost entirely around more
controversial areas marked on the map, like the
Yongbyon nuclear complex. Google said that North
Korea had been one of the largest places with
limited map data in the world. The details added
to the map, however, didn't come from the North
Korean leader Kim Jong Un's regime. Google said
"a community of citizen cartographers" used the
Internet search giant's Google Map Maker software
over a period of years to pinpoint road and place
names. Google Map Maker works in a similar way to
Wikipedia, allowing users to add, edit and review
    information.
  • Caleb Moore, 25, was competing at the X Games in
the snowmobile freestyle final Thursday in Aspen,
Colorado, when he came up short while trying to
do a back flip. The front skis of the machine
clipped the landing hill and Moore shot forward
over the handlebars. The 450-pound snowmobile
struck him as he slid down the hill and the
machine tumbled over him. He remains in critical
condition. The X Games Aspen features competitors
in snowmobiling, snowboard and skiing events.
  • Iran says its latest bid to join the space race
has come to fruition. According to official
Iranian news reports, a monkey was strapped into
a rocket and launched 75 miles into the sky on
Monday. Though Iran's foes fear the real aim may
not be for space exploration but to test missile
    launching capabilities for less peaceful
    purposes.
  • Tiger Woods bested the field at the Farmers
Insurance Open at Torrey Pines to win the
tournament for the seventh time in his
career. That was not the only milestone for
Woods, however, as the victory also marked the
75th time he has won a PGA Tour event.
