Introduction
  • The State Land Office was established in 1887 by
    order of the General Assembly. The State Land
    Office serves as the repository for deeds and
    plats of land previously or currently owned by
    the State, with the exception of state highways
    and right-of-ways, which are housed in the
    Indiana Department of Transportation, and State
    universities, which are kept at each university
    (IC 4-20.5-2-4).

What we do
  • Approve the legal description of real property
    prior to purchase or sale by state agencies.
  • Provides abstract records and documents from
    State Archives and Court houses for the purpose
    of identifying State owned property.
  • Provides aerial photography copies to City,
    County, State Government private companies and
    individuals.

  • Help with property selection for acquisition.
  • Central point of contact for assessments and tax
    bills for all state owned land within 92
    counties.
  • Repository of all original deeds for state owned
    properties.

  • Repository for original county and state boundary
    descriptions.
  • Repository for other legal and/or historical
    documents pertaining to real property (land
    patents, treaties, leases, etc.)
  • Assist with data driven decisions on property
    utilization and disposition.

  • Pen and Ink Mylar maps

  • Historical Aerial Photo Mylar maps.
  • Only enough funding for a handful of counties
    annually.
  • Public has to visit SLO in Indianapolis to get an
    aerial photo.

  • Filing cabinets containing thousands of deeds.
  • Only available at SLO downtown Indianapolis.
  • No digital backup in event of damage (Flood,
    Fire, etc.)

  • State Standard GIS software. (ESRI ArcGIS)

  • Aerial Photography available digitally and
    statewide datasets with same standards and year
    flown.
  • Made available to the public via several
    websites. (Google Earth, live local, IGS, etc.)
  • Public interface for ordering hard copies is in
    development and will be live soon.

  • Photography can be ordered and shipped to
    customer.
  • Will offer 2000, 2003, and 2005 DOQQs
  • 10.00 per sheet plus SH.

  • Web Interface for viewing information relating to
    State owned property.
  • Deeds and Plat information will be hyperlinked to
    parcels.
  • County and State parcel ID will be available for
    easier reference.
  • Additional information available for queries
    (acquisition disposition dates,
    Grantor/Grantee, purchasing agency, etc.)

  • Search by PLS, Parcel ID, transfer date, etc. in
    development.

Status as of February 15, 2008
  • Mylar maps for all counties scanned.
  • Deeds for all counties scanned.
  • All Counties have been fully digitized and
    delivered to SLO.
  • Web interface for public at www.in.gov/idoa
  • Ordering hard copies of aerial photography over
    internet currently being tested.
  • 5.6M returned to taxpayers from targeted
    disposition of surplus real property June
    2006-December 2007.
