While I take attendancePlease create your Name
Plate
  • Please begin creating a Name Plate to set in
    front of you. This will help me and your
    classmates get to know your name quickly.
  • First AND Last Name on Both Sides written EXTRA
    LARGE and NEATLY.
  • Next, decorate with 5-7 appropriate pictures,
    icons, phrases, etc. that describe more about
    you, your hobbies, jobs, favorites, etc. Youll
    be sharing with your classmates, so keep it safe.
  • Be sure to place it in the basket by the window
    before you leave class.

Name Plate Activity
  • One-Step-at-a-Time Directions
  • Please stand up, with your name plate.
  • Form groups of 3-5, help me make sure everyone is
    included.
  • Select a group leader.
  • Group Leader Select who will go first and in
    which direction sharing will take place.
  • As the music plays, take turns introducing
    yourselves by sharing your interests from your
    name plate.
  • Regroup and do again.
  • Place by hour in baskets by windows at end of the
    hour.

  • This is my 25th year teaching high school
    chemistry.
  • This is my 18th year teaching chemistry at Baker
    College.
  • This is my 3rd year teaching chemistry for
    Michigan Virtual High School, a completely
    on-line school.

  • Bachelors of Science, Chemistry Major and Biology
    Minor, 1989, Ferris State University
  • Masters of Science, Chemistry Education, 1992,
    Central Michigan University
  • Specialists Degree, (30 hours beyond Masters)
    Chemistry, 1996

My kids
  • My son, Ryan, is a 2013 graduate from the
    University of Michigan in the field of
    Informatics. He is an R-P Graduate, Class of
    2007.
  • My two Yorkie puppies are named Daisy and Duke.

  • Paul and I sail in the summer

and ski in the winter.

Daily Routine
  • When you arrive, please take out your notes,
    pencil and calculator.
  • Place your backpack, purse and extra items on the
    floor under your desk or chair.
  • Your personal electronic devices should be put
    away out of sight at all times.

    observation as we practice the Scientific Method
    in the lab.

What is Chemistry?
  • The study of the composition of matter and the
    changes it undergoes.

The Power of Observation
  • One of the most important skills of a chemist.
  • It allows us to detect chemical change the
    heart of chemistry ?
  • Observations use your senses!
  • What do you see, hear, feel, smell?

Review Physical Change
  • Alters a given material without changing its
    composition.
  • Cutting, grinding, bending, boiling, freezing,
    and crushing are all physical changes.

Review Chemical Change
  • A change that produces new substances.
  • Examples include
  • The rusting of metals
  • Tarnishing, oxidation, corroding, etc.
  • Burning
  • Gasoline, paper, propane (or any fuel)
  • Metals reacting with acid

Lets Practice our Power of Observations
  1. Lets get into groups of 3-4 people. I will
    assign you a group and a station to report to in
    a moment when we move.
  2. You will be working in the lab behind you, there
    are 7 stations with materials you need located in
    the center of the room.
  3. Let me hand out the activity and give some
    directions.
