Early days

• Childhood bout of polio left him lame
• 1778 returned Edinburgh for private education
• 1779 began at the Royal High School of Edinburgh

• Studied classics
• Scott met blind poet Thomas Blacklock and Robert
  Burns
• Became lawyer in Edinburgh

Literary career

• At the age of 25 he began writing and translating
  from German
• Founded a printing press, his poetry brought him
  fame
• 1825 his printing company nearly collapsed
• He kept writing and producing biography of
  Napoleon

• Written in 1819, historical fiction
• Saxon noble family at a time when the English
  nobility was overwhelmingly Norman
• Hundred years after the Battle of Hastings
• While King Richard was fighting the Crusades
  abroad, his brother John tried to take the throne.
