What ??
  • The Challenger was a space shuttle. It exploded
    on its tenth mission. Here is a timeline of its
    missions

1st Mission April 4, 1983
3rd Mission August 30, 1983
5th Mission April 6, 1984
9th Mission October 30, 1985

  • The Challenger exploded 73 seconds after
    launching on January 28, 1986. The time period
    was the 80s.

Who??
  • NASA was a leader of the event because they
    launched the shuttle, but it wasnt their fault
    that the Challenger exploded. The following
    slides are brief summaries of the brave crew on
    the shuttle.

  • She was a high school teacher in New Hampshire.
  • Christa had 2 children.
  • She was happily married to Steven McAuliffe.
  • Her Hobbies included jogging, volleyball, and
    tennis
  • When Christa passed away she was only 38 years
    old.

  • Judy was a senior systems engineer in product
    development
  • Her hobbies included bicycling, running, and
    flying during her free time. She was also a
    classical pianist.
  • When Judy passed away she was 37 years old

    Jarboe.
  • He was a spacecraft engineer.
  • Gregs hobbies were squash (like racquetball,
    which he also liked to do), backpacking,
    white-water rafting, playing classical guitar.
  • He only lived to be 42 years old.

  • He was married to Cheryl Moore, also he had two
    children.
  • Ronald was a physicist.
  • His hobbies included running, boxing, football,
    playing cards, cooking. He was a 5th degree black
    belt karate instructor and a performing jazz
    saxophonist.
  • When the accident occurred he was only 36.

  • Ellison was a pilot of a shuttle.
  • He enjoyed running, hunting, fishing, and sports.
  • When he passed away he was 40 years old.

    children.
  • Dick was a pilot for more than 45 types of
    aircraft.
  • His hobbies were flying, oil painting,
    woodworking, motorcycling, racquetball, jogging,
    and most outdoor sports.
  • He passed away at 47 years old.

  • He was married to Jane Jarrell and he had 3
    children.
  • He was in the Navy. Also, he was a pilot
    instructor.
  • His hobbies included woodworking, running,
    tennis, and squash.
  • Mike was 41 years old when he passed away.

Why did this happen?
  • The explosion was thought to have happened
    because it was to cold outside (36F.) The
    temperature affected this because it caused the
    O-rings to fail. What are O-rings you ask? They
    are seals that go between the rocket boosters.

How would the world be different?
  • We asked you at the beginning to think about
    this question as you watched our presentation.
    This is our answer If this tragedy hadnt
    occurred, then space travel wouldnt be as safe
    today. Now, NASA takes extra precautions before
    launching their shuttles. Also, it reminded us
    that space travel is dangerous and can cost
    lives.
