Who is Upton Sinclair?

• Sinclair was born in Baltimore, MD
• Wanted to become a writer
• Went undercover as a meatpacking worker in the
  meatpacking factories in Chicago
• Used his experiences in the factories to help
  write The Jungle

Who is Upton Sinclair?

• The main character is Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian
  immigrant who moves to America to achieve the
  American Dream, but instead faced the hardships
  of poor, urban life working conditions
• Exposed the dangerous work conditions and
  unsanitary meatpacking practices in Chicago in
  the early twentieth century

  Jungle was to expose the working conditions for
  poor immigrants, not to expose the meat packing
  industry

Result Meat Inspection Act of 1906

• All animals required to pass an inspection by the
  U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prior to
  slaughter
• FDA was created due to the Pure Food Drug Act
  of 1906
• All carcasses were subject to a post-mortem
  inspection
• Cleanliness standards were established for
  slaughterhouses and processing plants.
