Who is Upton Sinclair?
  • Sinclair was born in Baltimore, MD
  • Wanted to become a writer
  • Went undercover as a meatpacking worker in the
    meatpacking factories in Chicago
  • Used his experiences in the factories to help
    write The Jungle

  • The main character is Jurgis Rudkus, a Lithuanian
    immigrant who moves to America to achieve the
    American Dream, but instead faced the hardships
    of poor, urban life working conditions
  • Exposed the dangerous work conditions and

    the early twentieth century
