The Beginning
  • On the day of February 29, 1860 a remarkable
    young man was born.
  • Herman was the baby boy of two German immigrants
formally known as George Franciska Brunn.
  • Hollerith began his life in the great city of
    Buffalo, New York.

3
Graduate Days
  • After Herman attended grade school he went on to
    further his education in science.
  • Hollerith entered the City College of New York
where as he graduated in 1875.
  • This remarkable young man did not stop there he
better his career by attending the Columbia
University School of Mines in 1879.

Family Days
  • Hollerith vowed through sickness and in health
until death do them part to his beloved wife
Lucia Beverley Talcott on September 15, 1890.
  • They later decided to have a family where as six
children came into the picture. (Three sons and
    three daughters.)
  • Other than his inventions Herman was said to love
three things His German heritage, his privacy
    and his cat ( Bismarck).

5
The Great Invention!
  • Being urged by John Shaw Billings, Herman
Hollerith developed a mechanism to make
electrical connections trigger a counter to
    record information.
  • Hollerith saw that if numbers could be punched in
specified locations on a card, in the now
familiar rows and columns, then the cards could
    be counted or sorted mechanically.
  • Hollerith built machines under contract for the
US Census Bureau, which used them to tabulate the
1890 Census in only one year.

6
What did it do?
  • He invented the first automatic card-feed
mechanism and the first key punch ,which allowed
a skilled operator to punch 200300 cards per
    hour.
  • The 1890 Tabulator was hardwired to operate only
    on 1890 Census cards.

7
Herman do you need Help?
  • Why yes he did have help in inventing the
    Electric Tabulating Machine.
  • A man by the name of John Billings urged Herman
to build a machine that would be able to record
    information.
  • By taking Billings advice Hollerith was able to
become one of the most successful men to create
something in society that could be used for years.
