What is it?

• The Extended Essay is
• An independent research/investigation on a topic
  chosen by the student in cooperation with a
  supervisor (Teacher-Advisor) in the school
• No more than 4000 words
• Approximately 40 hours of work by the student
• Approximately 4-5 hours of work by the
  Teacher-Advisor

Relating the EE to the IB Diploma

• The final grade for the Extended Essay is put
  onto a matrix and crossed with the final grade
  for Theory of Knowledge.
• Students can earn up to 3 additional points
  towards their IB Diploma.

The role of the Teacher-Advisor

• To provide students advice and guidance
  throughout the research and writing process
  (approximately 3- 5 hours)
• To read the best draft of the essay and provide
  comments (but no edits)
• To conduct the viva voce interview with the
  student
• To provide a final report/predicted grade

• Choosing a topic

• Conduct all research, reading and collect
  necessary data

Key Points for Teacher-Advisors and Students

• Students cannot expect work submitted to their
  Teacher-Advisor to be returned to them in less
  than 10 days.
• Teacher-Advisors should return work to students
  within 14 days of it being submitted to them.
• If a student who does not meet the deadlines of
  the Essay Timeline (including the paperwork
  submissions at the end of each phase), the
  Teacher-Advisor may remove the student from
  his/her Extended Essay Caseload.
• Teachers must contact the Extended Essay
  Coordinator regarding concerns that he/she does
  not want to address on the Extended Essay
  Student/Teacher-Advisor Contract
