• We learned in Unit 5 that most of the European
  countries took colonies (around the world, but
  mostly in Africa and Asia).

How?

• The Europeans were able to do this because they
  were bigger, stronger, more powerful, and richer.

The Turning Point!!

• World War II was a turning point for these
  colonies, however, because after the war, the
  colonies tried to get their independence.

Why now?

• In Africa, people wanted to fight for their
  independence because
• Citizens views had changed
• Europe was weakened from the war
• Africa had sent troops
• to fight in WWII

• It wasnt only Africa that de-colonized. India
  got their independence too. They didnt fight
  for it, they negotiated.

Remember?

• India had a wise and inspirational leader,
  Gandhi. Gandhi went on to influence other great
  leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King,
  Jr., and Cesar Chavez.

After countries were decolonized, life was not
still not perfect

• Due to the Europeans control they created many
  conflicts afterwards (remember the Rwandan
  genocide?)
• In South Africa they gave power to the small of
  whites living there once. When they left the
  South Africa government still gave the white
  south Africans power and denied the black
  majority the right to vote.

Apartheid

• In 1948 the government even tried to segregate
  interaction upon the races. This was called
  Apartheid.

PROTESTS

• However the black fought black with protest and
  civil disobedience. Nelson Mandela even went to
  jail (doesnt this sound very familiar?)
• Foreign countries even stepped in to ban/boycott
  South Africa for their racist policies.
• Thanks to all of the people who struggled and
  fought Nelson Mandela became the 1st black
  president of South Africa in 1994!
