- Reality Check on page 269 - Read the story
individually - Partner up with the person sitting next to you
and create a list of advantages and disadvantages
of supervisory positions.

- Most people that want to become managers start
off in supervisory positions. - Why do you think this is?
- What type of people have you or do you currently
work for? - Are they good/bad managers/supervisors? Why?
- What makes a good manager or supervisor?
- What is the down side to taking a management

- Why do companies prefer to promote current
employees over hiring someone outside the
company? - Reward employees (benefit)
- Knowledge of company operations and policies
- Knowledge of the employees work ethic and
attendance

- Accomplishing the goals of an organization
through the effective use of people and other
resources (money, buildings, equipment,
materials). - They determine the best way to apply employees
and resources so that a business may be
successful.
Ideally, good managers equal good business and
bad managers equal bad business
7Main Functions of Management
- Planning analyze information and make decisions
about what needs to be done - Organizing determine how accomplish plans
(arrange resources to complete plans) - Implementing carrying out plans (help employees
work effectively) - Controlling evaluating the results (have the
company objectives been accomplished)
8Non-Management
- Employees may be expected to plan and organize
their work to complete work efficiently
(prioritize!) - How is this different than what managers do?
- Managers complete all four functions on a regular
basis and have authority over people and jobs.

- How would this help to motivate employees?

- Gives you ownership of your position
- Provide trusting relationships
10Levels of Management
- Supervisor manager who directs the work of
employees (first level manager that also performs
nonmanagerial functions) - Mid-manager manager who spends most of his/her
time on one or two management functions such as
planning or controlling - Executive top-level manager who spends almost
all his/her time on management functions and
decisions that affect the entire company
