Why are we doing this?
  • .will examine the reasons behind unequal food
distribution and its connection to health,
    education and the economy
  • Examine patterns of global food production and
    consumption.
  • Examine soil profiles.
  • Examine how desertification, salinization, and
    irrigation have affected food supply.
  • Examine the evolution and success of the Green
    Revolution.
  • Identify areas of the world where hunger is a
    problem.
  • This is a culmination of everything weve been
    doing over the last week.

3
What Does the Information Tell Us?
  • Start at square one
  • Imagine the world as a blank slate as just
    soil, water and sun.
  • Now add in some variables
  • What else plays a role in agriculture

4
Chapter 10 Told us What?
  • Human Factors Affecting Food Resources
  • War
  • Debt
  • Technology
  • Government Policy
  • Human Factors Affecting Sea-Based Resources
  • Technology
  • Government Policy
  • Aquaculture

5
Human Factors Affecting Food Resources
  • War (p. 245)
  • Displaces Farmers
  • Prevents cultivation (growing of crops)
  • Damages land
  • Allocates resources away from agriculture and
    towards military
  • Prevents importation of food

6
Human Factors Affecting Food Resources
  • Debt (p.246)
  • Must spend money to pay down debt instead of
investing that money into food resources
  • Must export resources that could otherwise be
    used to feed population
  • Must use land for cash crops instead of setting
land aside for food crops to feed people of the
    country

7
Human Factors Affecting Food Resources
  • Technology
  • The Green Revolution
  • Increase the supply of food
  • Many countries became self sufficient
  • But it came at a cost(p. 249)
  • Genetically Modified Products
  • Goal was to create bigger more resistant foods
  • There may be a risk to human and environmental
    health (p. 251)

8
Human Factors Affecting Food Resources
  • Government Policy
  • Subsidies
  • Willingness to trade

10
Human Factors Affecting Sea-Based Resources
  • Technology (p. 253)
  • Were able to catch more but the stock of fish
    isnt be replaced any faster.
  • Government Policy (p.256)
  • Subsidies
  • Exclusive Economic
  • Aquaculture (p. 258)
  • Fish farming
  • Increased water pollution, wetland loss and
    mangrove destruction

11
The Green Revolution
  • The Green Revolution had an enormous impact on
    the consumption of food resources.
  • To an extent, our map illustrates that impact.
  • Most of South America and Asia became
    self-sufficient, yet Africa didnt, why?

12
The Good
  • Farmers could produce more grain.
  • Many nations became self-sufficient in the
production of grain and could therefore look
towards producing other, more expensive goods.
  • Over the short term famine and malnutrition
    decreased.

13
The Bad
  • The increased production of grain had a profound
    impact on the environment.
  • Over time fertilizer made the soil less fertile.
  • Irrigation techniques caused salinization (salt
    deposits) in soils.
  • Pesticides contaminated waters and foods.
  • Many farmers couldnt afford all the inputs.
  • Loss of biodiversity.
  • Increased economic inequality.
  • Increased the price of grain products making it
even harder for the have-nots to produce and
    survive.

14
What else happened?
  • There was a massive increase in world population
because the carrying capacity of the planet
    increased.
  • The increased population has also had an effect
    on the environment.

15
Health and Economic Forces
  • So what ended up happening to Africa?
  • Health
  • Plays a big role in production of food resources
  • What health issues affect Africa? Could this have
an impact on the production of food resources?
  • Education
  • Its hard to get an education when there is no
one to teach you or when the education system
doesnt have any resources to draw on
  • Economic Forces
  • The Green Revolution helped spark a population
boom which increased the demand for food.
  • What happens to the price of goods when there is
a greater demand for those goods?
  • Imagine an auction.

16
What happens as demand increases?
17
  • As demand increases so does the price. Imagine
what happened to the price of grain when the
population of our planet essentially doubled
    between 1960 and 2008.

18
So
  • The map we created is a basic overview of global
    food production.
  • Furthermore, the map gives insight into factors
affecting food production war, politics, health
    and economics.
  • To an extent it shows how the green revolution
has impacted global food production. Some nations
became productive, others got left behind.
