The Regions History
  • Asia Minor was part of the Hittite and Persian
    Empires.
  • 330s B.C. Alexander the Great conquers Asia
    Minor.

  • Later it was part of the Roman Empire. When the
    Roman Empire collapsed, this part of the Roman
    Empire became part of the Byzantine Empire.

  • Constantinople became the capital of the
    Byzantine Empire.

1000 A.D.
  • The Seljuks Turks invaded Asia Minor. The
    Seljuks were a nomadic people from Central Asia
    who converted to Islam.

1453 A.D.
  • The Ottoman Turks captured the city of
    Constantinople, making it their empires capital.

1500s 1600s
  • The Ottoman Empire controlled parts of North
    Africa, Southwest Asia, and southeastern Europe.

World War I
  • The Ottoman Turks backed the losing side in WWI.
    As a consequence, the Ottomans lost all their
    territory outside of what is now Turkey.

Father of the Turks
  • Out of the ashes of the post war the father of
    the Turks emerged. His name Kemal Ataturk, and
    he created modern day Turkey.

Future of Turkey
  • Ataturk modernized Turkey banned the fez, the
    traditional hat of Turkish men. New laws made it
    illegal for women to wear veils.

  • Ataturk believed that Turkey needed to modernize.
    He replaced the Arabic alphabet with the Latin
    alphabet. The European calendar and metric
    system replaced Islamic ones.

Government
  • Turkey is a democracy with a national legislature
    called the National Assembly. Turkey is a
    secular state, church and state are separate.

Economy
  • Turkeys economy includes factories and farming
    with related fields of employment.

Dams
  • Turkey has begun building dams on the Tigris and
    Euphrates rivers which is the country of their
    origin. Syria and Iraq worry about others
    controlling their water supply.

  • Ethnic Turks make up 80 of Turkeys population.
    Kurds make-up roughly 20 of its population.

Turkish Cooking
  • Turkish cooking resembles Mediterranean cooking
    with olives, vegetables, cheese, yogurt and
    bread. Shish kebab-grilled meat on a skewer-is a
    favorite Turkish dish.
