• Biosphere 2 was the worlds most airtight
  building. The building expanded in the heat and
  contracted at night in the cool.

• On Sept. 26th, 1991 the first of 2 groups of
  scientists entered Biosphere 2. This group lasted
  2 years. Media hype was big!!

• Each of the main biomes of the world were added.
  2800 species of living things from all over the
  world.

• Ocean biome. A biome is a major area of the world
  with certain kinds of plants and animals. The
  beach is in the distance!

• The grassland biome. It produced much of the
  oxygen in Biosphere 2.

• Agriculture areas grew food for the Biospherians.
  
• Bananas and sweet potatoes grew well but the crew
  was always hungry and never had enough food.

• The man in blue was the doctor. Look at how
  skinny they were. All the scientists lost a lot
  of weight due to food shortages.

• Each Biospherian had their own room and used it
  to get away from the others

• After 6 months, the eight members had split into
  two arguing groups. After they left Biosphere 2,
  they didnt talk to each other for over 10 years!!

• Biosphere2 had a library on the top floor, but by
  the end of the two years no one used it because
  they got too winded climbing stairs

• The oxygen levels became so low in Biosphere 2
  that they had to pump oxygen in twice during the
  two years.
• It was a cloudier than normal time those years.

• After 2 years, the crew emerged, skinnier, but
  happy to be out. One thing they immediately
  noticed was the obnoxious smells of perfumes and
  car exhaust.

• A second mission was attempted in 1994. This one
  lasted only a few months because of arguing and
  poor conditions.

One couple even broke a hole in the glass wall to
sabotage the experiment.

• Since 1995, Columbia University has owned
  Biosphere 2 and used it as a learning place for
  students and for holding public tours.

• In 2006, a company purchased the land and will
  turn it into a housing development. What will
  happen to the building is unknown.
