from the Dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises
7Five Steps of Ignatian Pedagogy
- Study the Context
- Examine the Experience
- Reflect on the Experience
- Decide upon a course of action
- 5. Evaluate the Lights, the Darkness of the
learning experience. From the Exercises, what
are Consolations or what are Desolations?
8 The Next Steps of Ignatian Pedagogy
- To each period of meditation or contemplation in
the Exercises, Ignatius added a shorter period, a
few final moments he called Reflection on the
entire hour of prayer. - For a teacher this becomes, in modern terms,
Assessment of Instruction. We never finish
with it! - In addition to assessment of student
understanding, it includes rexamination of the
personal convictions we arrive at about the goals
of our teaching, the truths of the experiences,
in such fashion that both professor and students
are impelled to pass from knowing into action.
9SUMMARY
- Ignatian Pedagogy is/should be liberationist.
- It is always problem-posing pedagogy. When
appropriate, it is dialogical. - It always seeks a Literacy of Discernment, the
Greater Glory of God.
