Careers at Transend
  • Lets be honest
  • Graduate careers are a long way off!
  • How do you get to graduate?

8
Food for thought
  • Life present lots of opportunities.
  • Decisions made in high school can and do affect
    lives.
  • Subjects chosen now do define a direction in
    future life.
  • Is it really fair?

9
How I got here
  • Year 10 - Maths Stage 1
  • Failed!
  • Years 11 and 12 Satisfactory achievements in
Physics, Maths Stage 2, Chemistry, Legal Studies
    and German

10
Where is the English?
11
University
  • First year science
  • Failed - quit mid year
  • First year Modern Languages
  • Failed - quit mid year
  • Got a job.

12
University (4 years later)
  • First year Engineering 3 near misses
  • Second year - 3 failures
  • Third year overloaded but passed.
  • Four and halfth year - passed (53)

13
What do we do?
  • Choosing subjects now which are of interest
will be enjoyable but where does it lead?
  • Choosing traditional subjects may be a safe
approach but what impact does it has on
    motivation?

14
What do we do?
  • Deciding a career path is a risk, or cost-benefit
    trade off, type decision.
  • Do we give them room to get it wrong?
  • We are allowed to get it wrong!!!

15
The good news!
  • Teenagers make decisions based on risk all the
    time.
  • Do I take the free calls, or the free texts?
  • Do I attack the Orcs or Space Marines?
  • Football or girlfriend?
  • Do I download the update, or reprogram it myself?
  • Help Mum? Nah!
  • They are a smart bunch!

16
The balanced approach (maybe!?!)
  • Undertaking a mixture of interesting and
technical subjects does lay a great platform for
    the future.
  • Maths and science subjects lead to
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Computing
  • Accounting
  • Economics
  • Teaching etc
  • There is room to fail, and start again!

17
Skills we require
  • Keen to learn
  • Ability to learn
  • Team work
  • Communication
  • Problem solving
  • Learns from mistakes

18
Summary
  • Encourage you to produce well rounded, risk
aware, self aware and happy people.
  • People who can help me out, and teach me a thing
or two in five to ten years time.
