  • Medical Emergency
  • REMAIN CALM!
  • Do not administer first aid this is
  • the nurses responsibility. If a life
  • threatening situation exists where
  • waiting for medical personnel is not
  • possible, only administer life saving
  • intervention if you are properly
  • trained and if you will not be placed
  • at risk of injury.
  • As circumstances permit, provide
  • hazardous information about the
  • offending substances (e.g. name of
  • chemical, MSDS) to medical
  • personnel.
  • Dial Nurses office _________ or Main office
    ________
  • (write extension in blank)
  • Provide the following information
  • What happened
  • Injured persons name and location
  • Your name, location, and telephone number
  • DO NOT HANG UP Remain on the line until the
    dispatcher disconnects
  • For the injured party
  • Maintain crowd control.
  • Do not move the injured person unless there
    is danger of further injury.
  • This also applies if the person is conscious
    and able to move without
  • assistance. Keep the person warm and
    continually reassured.
  • If the injury was the result of chemical or
    biological contamination follow
  • appropriate procedures as outlined below under
    chemical spills or
  • biological spills.

Medical Emergency
3
  • Personal Injury
  • REMAIN CALM!
  • Skin Contact with Chemical or Biological
    Materials
  • Remove contaminated clothing
  • (chemical) Flood affected skin with copious
    amounts
  • of water for at least 15 minutes.
  • (biological) Wash affected area with soap and
    water
  • for several minutes.
  • Send injured person to the nurse immediately.
  • Provide all relevant information about
    offending
  • material.
  • Report incident to building principal. If
    injured person
  • is a student, call parent/guardian.
  • Eye Contact with Chemical or Biological Materials
  • Flood eyes with copious amounts
  • of water from eyewash for at least 15
    minutes. Do
  • not use a portable eyewash squeeze bottle.
  • Summon the nurse immediately to the injured
    party.
  • Provide all relevant information about
    offending
  • material.
  • Report incident to building principal. If
    injured
  • person is a student, call parent/guardian.
  • Minor Burns (skin is not broken)
  • Rinse affected area with cold water (not ice)
    for
  • several minutes.
  • Send injured party to the nurse. If injured
  • person is a student, call parent/guardian.
  • If the burn has broken the skin, treat as
    minor
  • puncture wound or cut.
  • Minor Puncture Wounds and Cuts
  • Wash injury with soap and water for several
    minutes.
  • Send injured party to the nurse. Do not cover
    wound
  • until it has been seen by medical personnel.
    If the
  • injured party is a student, call
    parent/guardian.

Personal Injury
4
  • Critical Laboratory Incidents
  • REMAIN CALM!
  • Evacuate the immediate area of the incident.
  • Notify the main office and your department
chair or team leader. If warranted, activate the
    fire alarm.
  • Report any injuries as indicated above. Meet
with nurse or emergency personnel to furnish all
    relevant information.
  • Provide emergency personnel with MSDS of
    chemicals involved.
  • Faculty members responsibility in an
emergency is to the students. Supervise all
    students. Teachers at planning
  • should assist other teachers and the
    administration.
  • Report incident to building principal. If
injured person is a student, call
    parent/guardian.
  • For specific incidents, see the appropriate
    headings below.

Critical Laboratory Incidents
5
  • Biological Laboratory Incidents
  • REMAIN CALM!
  • Microbiological Culture Spill
  • Isolate the area of the spill. Students
should move away from the general area of the
spill to confine the contaminated area.
  • They should leave any belongings in the area
    of contamination.
  • Don personal protective equipment (PPE) as
    needed before decontamination.
  • Any stationary objects (e.g. desks, benches)
that were contaminated should be flooded with 10
    bleach solution for ten
  • minutes, then wiped clean with disposable
paper towels (not a sponge or mop). Paper towels
    should be discarded as
  • biohazardous waste.
  • Contaminated clothing must be removed from
the wearer and sterilized by autoclaving (121º C
and 15 psi for 15 minutes)
  • before being returned.
  • Contaminated skin should be washed several
minutes with soap and water. If injury has
    occurred, summon the nurse.
  • Broken glass should be disposed of in a red
biohazard bag, not the conventional sharps box.
  • Report the spill to the department chair, the
nurse, and the principal. If injury occurred to
a student, also notify the parent or

Biological Laboratory Incidents
6
  • Chemical Laboratory Incidents
  • REMAIN CALM!
  • Chemical Spill
  • Isolate the area of the spill. Students
should move away from the general area of the
spill to confine the contaminated area. If
  • necessary, evacuate the room.
  • If the material is flammable, turn off heat
sources and gas jets. Increase ventilation by
    activating fume hoods or opening
  • windows if possible and safe to do so.
  • Don personal protective equipment (PPE) as
    needed.
  • If the spill is manageable, use the
appropriate cleanup and disposal methods as
outlined by the MSDS. If this is not possible
  • because of the size of the spill, the
hazardous nature of the chemicals, or other
reasons, report the incident to the Main Office,
  • describing what resources are needed to clean
up the spill. Provide emergency personnel with
    the MSDS of the spilled
  • chemical.
  • If anyone was injured as a result of the
spill, summon the nurse and provide the MSDS. If
the injured party was a student,
  • notify the parent/guardian.
  • Notify the department chair, the principal,
    and the Secondary Science Specialist.

Fire REMAIN CALM!
  • Fire Procedures
  • Pull the fire alarm and assist with evacuating
the school. Notify the principal of relevant
    details.
  • Dial 911 from an outside telephone line.
Provide the fire location, what happened, details
of any injuries, and your name,
  • location and phone number.
  • If possible, confine the fire by closing the
hood sash or closing doors and windows. If this
is an electrical fire, disconnect the
  • source of electricity if possible. However,
if there is any question of whether these
measures can be done safely, do not
  • attempt them. Evacuate.
  • Clothing on fire
  • The wearer should stop, drop, and roll to
extinguish flames. If possible, flames should be
    smothered with a fire blanket.
  • The affected body parts should be drenched
with cool water from a faucet or (preferred) a
    safety shower.
  • The injured person must be examined by
licensed medical personnel as soon as possible,
even if no injury or discomfort is
  • reported.
  • Report the incident to the principal, the
nurse, and the Secondary Science Specialist.

Hazardous Waste Management
  • Training of Personnel
  • New personnel (students, staff, faculty) may
not work in unsupervised positions until they
    have received hazardous
  • chemical information training.
  • Personnel will receive annual hazardous
    chemical information training. The Secondary
    Science Specialist
  • will maintain records of current training.
  • Hazardous Waste
  • All hazardous waste containers must be labeled
with the contents. No abbreviations, trade
    names, or formulas
  • should be used. If possible, a brief
description of the hazardous nature should be
    stated (e.g. flammable, corrosive)
  • Hazardous waste containers should be tightly
closed except when waste is being added.
    Containers should be
  • stored away from students.
  • Hazardous waste containers must be removed
within 90 days of being filled.
  • Hazardous waste must be disposed of as
indicated by the MSDS. Teachers should take care
    that incompatible
  • waste materials are disposed of separately to
prevent a dangerous combination. If hazardous
    waste must be
  • disposed of professionally, contact the
    Secondary Science Specialist to arrange.
