Title: Natural Selection of the Wooleybooger Lab

1
Natural Selection of the Wooleybooger Lab
  • Intro
  • On a distant planet there exists 4 species of a
    creature called a Woolybooger
  • The 4 different species include
  • Clothespinmouth
  • Tweezermouth
  • Spoonmouth
  • Knifemouth
  • Each of you will play the part of a wooleybooger
    on this planet

2
Hypothesis
  • State your hypothesis
  • Include your reasoning why you think that way
  • Purpose/problem
  • List Materials
  • The 4 different species include
  • Clothespinmouth
  • Knifemouth
  • Spoonmouth
  • Tweezermouth

3
Procedure
  • You will run through 5 trials (generations)
  • Each trial will require your woolybooger to gain
at least 20 beans (put the beans back after every
    trial)
  • If 20 beans are not acquired during the time
    period, your woolybooger has died
  • When you die, you may be reborn as the
son/daughter of an existing woolybooger (choose a
    new mouth)
  • Record the number of wooleyboogers that survived
    on your data chart

4
Data table
  • Data Table should include the following
  • 5 generations
  • Total survived Clothespinmouths
  • Total survived Tweezermouths
  • Total survived Spoonmouths
  • Total survived Knifemouths
  • Total the number of each Wooleybooger that
    survived after each generation

5
Record the number of beans for each Wooleybooger

Graph
  • Collect data from all class groups
  • Graph the class data

Post Lab Questions
  • 1. How do populations change over time based
  • on adaptations? Use examples and ideas
  • from the lab to develop your conclusion.
  • 2. Use the following terms in one paragraph to
explain Natural Selection of the Wooleybooger.
  • Natural selection, Fitness, adaptation,
    survival
  • of the fittest, struggle for existence
  • 3. Construct a BAR graph to show the change in
    population over time.

8
Graphing - Selection
9
Selection
  • Develop three graphs that represent selection and
    the change in allele frequencies.
  • Use the genotypes to the left.
  • Directional
  • Stabilizing
  • Disruptive
  • Wooleyboogers
  • WW homozygous dominant
  • Ww Heterozygous dominant
  • Ww homozygous recessive
