  • Always consider your audience in every type of
    writing and communicating.
  • Should you use formal language
  • Is slang and informal language appropriate?
  • Many people today communicate via email. What
    are some rules for email etiquette?
  • Think/Pair/Share list as many as you can in 2
    minutes

Email Etiquette
  • Think about your audience
  • Do not use abbreviations for some audiences?
  • Be brief and to the point
  • Contractions are okay.
  • Slang is not.
  • Never use inappropriate or abusive language.

More Email Etiquette
  • Always use spell check
  • Reread your email and think about how your
    audience will interpret the information.
  • Be careful about sending and opening attachments
    from people you do not know. Why?

More Netiquette
  • Dont use emoticons (or little smiley faces)
  • Dont type in all caps It implies youre
    yelling at the other person
  • Only address friends, relatives and people close
    to you by their first names.
  • Use Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc. for all others

  • Re. means reply and should only be used in
    replies
  • Double check who you are replying to before
    sending especially when replying to a mailing
    list message.
  • Clean up emails before forwarding them.
  • Use italics to emphasize text
  • Use bullet points for readability
  • Punctuation matters

  • The Heading
  • Return address
  • Date last line
  • The Inside Address
  • Address you are sending the letter to
  • The Greeting
  • Dear .. (always ends in a colon)
  • The Body
  • Skip a line between paragraphs
  • The Complimentary Close
  • Ends with a comma
  • The Signature Line
  • Type out name to be signed
  • May include a second line for a title
