- TESOL Professional Development Scholarships
Established in 1995 to support the TESOL
membership with ongoing professional development
and to make the TESOL convention more enriching,
fulfilling, and accessible to all members. This
year, 41 scholarships were awarded, one for each
year of TESOL's history. Amount The waiver of
(a) convention registration only or (b)
convention registration and tuition for one Pre-
or Post-Convention Institute.Who's Eligible
All current TESOL members.

9Ruth Crymes TESOL Fellowship for Graduate Study
- Supports recent or current graduate students in
the development of projects with direct
application to ESOL language classroom
instruction. The award recipient is expected to
present the results of the project at a TESOL
convention within 3 years of receipt of the
award. - Amount One award of U.S.1,500 upon selection
and acceptance of the award and waiver of the
convention registration fee for a subsequent
year, when the project is presented.Who's
Eligible TESOL members who are or have been
enrolled within the past year in a TESOL or TEFL
graduate program that prepares teachers to teach
ESOL.
10Albert H. Marckwardt Travel Grants

- Established in 1976 to honor this distinguished
educator from the University of Michigan and
Princeton University who helped shape the
community of language scholars and teachers. Its
purpose is to assist graduate students traveling
to a TESOL convention. - Amount U.S.500 in addition to a waiver of the
convention registration fees. - Who's Eligible TESOL members who are graduate
students worldwide in TESL/TEFL programs.
11Are you teaching in an EFL context?
Supports EFL professionals in attending a TESOL
convention.Amount Travel and basic expenses
not to exceed U.S.2,500. Who's Eligible TESOL
members who are currently practicing EFL
teachers, teacher trainers, or supervisors with a
minimum of 5 years' experience in a
non-English-speaking setting. Preference is given
to applicants who have never attended a TESOL
convention.
12Are you a materials writer?
- Mary Finocchiaro Award for Excellence in
Nonpublished Pedagogical Materials
Created in 1987 in honor of Mary Finocchiaro, a
noted educator, author, and TESOL president
(1970-1971). It recognizes a person (or people)
who has achieved excellence through the
development of practical pedagogical materials
not currently under consideration for
publication.Amount U.S.500 Who's Eligible
Any TESOL member
13Are you a researcher?
- TESOL Award for Distinguished Research
Recognizes excellence in any area of research on
language teaching and learning. Amount
U.S.1,000. Funds donated by Thomson Heinle
Publishers. Who's Eligible Any TESOL member who
has completed an empirical research project and
subsequent scholarly paper and either (a) has a
publication date in TESOL Quarterly in the year
2007 or (b) has a publication date in another
scholarly journal in the year 2007.
14Are you a teacher, teacher educator, or
supervisor?
- Ruth Crymes TESOL Academies Fellowships
Supports teachers who wish to attend a TESOL
Academy. The Ruth Crymes Fellowship Fund was
established in memory of TESOL President
(1979-1980) and TESOL Quarterly Editor Ruth
Crymes, who was killed in an airplane crash en
route to the 1979 MEXTESOL Conference in
Mexico.Amount One fellowship per Academy, not
to exceed U.S.500, to be used toward
registration, room, board, and travel
expenses.Who's Eligible Any TESOL member who
is a classroom teacher or teacher
trainer/supervisor.
15Will you be a first-time presenter from outside
the US or Canada?
- TESOL Award for International Participation at
TESOL
Established to increase international
participation at the annual TESOL
convention.Amount Up to five awards to cover
travel and lodging expenses to attend and present
at the TESOL convention. Recipients should expect
to cover incidental expenses such as food,
telephone, and ground transportation. Funds
provided by the TEOFL Board of ETS.Who's
Eligible TESOL members who are from a country
outside the U.S. or Canada, who will be
first-time presenters at the TESOL convention,
and who have had a proposal accepted for
presentation at the 42nd Annual TESOL Convention
in 2008. TESOL members currently living in the
U.S. or Canada are not eligible. Preference given
to those from countries underrepresented at the
TESOL conventions.
16Are you a teacher-researcher?
- TESOL Award for Teacher as Classroom Action
Researcher
Recognizes excellence in action research on
language teaching and learning in an ESL/EFL
classroom. Given to facilitate attendance and
disseminate research findings at the TESOL annual
convention.Amount One award in the amount of
US 1,000. The funds are donated by The College
Board.Who's Eligible Any instructor who is a
TESOL member, who has at least 5 years of ESL/EFL
classroom teaching experience, and who has
completed a classroom action research project of
significant value to the profession.
17Are you teaching at a community college?
- TESOL Award for Dedication to Community College
ESL Teaching
Established to honor community college
instructors who have demonstrated a commitment to
teaching ESL and to facilitate their attendance
at the TESOL annual convention. Amount One
award in the amount of US1,000. The funds are
donated by Houghton Mifflin Publishers.Who's
Eligible Any instructor who is a TESOL member
with at least 3 years of ESL community college
classroom experience is eligible.
Part-time/adjunct instructors are encouraged to
apply.
18Are you presenting on NNEST Issues?
- TESOL Award for an Outstanding Paper on NNEST
Issues
This award was created to recognize scholarship
on NNEST issues.Amount One award of US250,
donated by East Carolina University, and a
convention registration to the Annual TESOL
Convention Who's Eligible TESOL members who
have had a proposal accepted for presentation
(paper or colloquium) on NNEST issues at the 42nd
Annual TESOL Convention in 2008. Both native and
nonnative speakers of English may apply.

Award
20James E. Alatis Award for Service to TESOL (by
nomination)
Established in 1987 to honor James E. Alatis for
his 21 years of devoted service as TESOL's first
executive director. Acknowledges outstanding
and extended service by TESOL members at
international, regional, and local
levels.Award A commemorative symbol presented
to the recipient at the TESOL convention and the
recipient's name placed on a permanent plaque in
TESOL Central Office. One award presented each
year.Who's Eligible Any TESOL member. Former
TESOL Board members may not be nominated until
three (3) years after completion of their Board
term.
21TESOL Virginia French Allen Award (by nomination)
Established in 1990 by Dr. Allen's former
students in honor of her long-time contributions
to the field. It honors an ESOL teacher who has
shared scholarship and provided service at the
affiliate level. Award A 3-year membership in
TESOL, including subscription to TESOL
Quarterly Who's Eligible Any member of a TESOL
affiliate who is not a member of TESOL.
22D. Scott Enright TESOL Interest Section Service
Award (by nomination)
Acknowledges outstanding and extended service to
and leadership in TESOL interest sections. First
granted in 1993 to D. Scott Enright, who passed
away in 1994, to recognize his leadership as a
member and chair of the Elementary Education
Interest Section and his work on behalf of all
TESOL interest sections while he served as
interest section representative on TESOL's
Executive Board from 1989 to 1992.Award A
commemorative certificate presented to the
recipient at the TESOL convention and the
recipient's name placed on a permanent plaque in
TESOL Central Office, plus registration to the
annual TESOL convention. One award is presented
each year.Who's Eligible Any TESOL member.
23Do you know an excellent teacher?
- TESOL Award for Excellence in Teaching
Honors teachers considered by their colleagues to
be excellent teachers.Amount U.S.1,000. The
funds for this award are donated by Thomson
Heinle Publishers.Who's Eligible Any TESOL
member with at least 5 years of ESL/EFL classroom
experience who is considered to be an excellent
teacher by another TESOL member.
24Do you know someone from an underrepresented
group in TESOL?
- TESOL Leadership Mentoring Program
Helps underrepresented groups within TESOL become
more involved in the work of the association.
Recipients are paired with mentors who guide them
throughout the year as they contribute their time
and expertise to TESOL and its varied activities
and projects. Amount (a) Basic registration to
the 42nd Annual TESOL Convention in 2008 and a
cash award of US1,000 for lodging expenses
during the convention (b) a mentoring
relationship with a TESOL leader (c)
participation in the Leadership Development
Certificate Program (held during the convention
and online afterwards) and (d) the opportunity
to volunteer for a TESOL activity of the
candidate's choice at the convention and
throughout the year (2008-2009). Who's Eligible
TESOL members who are (a) nonnative speakers of
English, (b) employed in settings other than
universities, or (c) underrepresented groups in
TESOL.
