  • How healthy are you in all of these areas?
  • Physical
  • Mental/Emotional
  • Social.
  • Health Is the combination of physical,
    mental/emotional, and social well being.
  • Remember that being healthy means you will strive
    to be the best you can be at any given time.

Health Continuum
  • Health continuum is a concept that states your
    health is always changing.
  • Example One minute you could be playing football
    and the next day you could wake up sick.
  • Below is what is at both ends of the health
    continuum
  • Premature Death ?------? High Level of Health
  • Remember Health is always changing!

Wellness
  • Wellness is an overall state of well-being, or
    total health.
  • To achieve wellness it requires an on going,
    lifelong commitment to PMSE.
  • Remember you need all of HEALTH (PMS(E)) to have
    WELLNESS!

Promoting Your Health
  • Lifestyle Factors
  • 8-10 hours of sleep
  • Eating Breakfast daily
  • Eating a variety of food groups
  • Maintain a health weight or low obesity levels.
  • Avoid Tobacco, Alcohol, and other drugs.
  • Abstain from sex before marriage
  • Manage stress
  • Maintain a positive relationships
  • Practice safe behaviors to prevent injuries
  • Have physical activity for at least 20-30minutes
    a day for 3-4 days a week.
  • Lifestyle Factors
  • Personal behaviors related to the way a
    person lives.
  • This will determine his or her level of health.

Prevention and Health
  • Prevention practicing health and safety habits
    to remain free of disease and injury.
  • Example Wear seat belts, sunscreen, etc...
  • If a smoker go outside or walk away from a
    nonsmoker.

Health Education
  • Health Education The providing of accurate
    health information to help people make healthy
    choices.
  • Health Literacy Refers to a persons capacity
    to learn about and understand basic health
    information and services and use these resources
    to promote his or her health / wellness.

  • Health literate individual needs to be
  • A critical thinker and problem solver
  • A responsible, productive citizen
  • A self directed learner
  • An effective communicator

  • HP 2010 is a nationwide health promotion and
    disease prevention plan designed to serve as a
    guide for improving the health of all people in
    the United States.

  • 1. To increase quality and years of healthy life
    for all Americans.
  • 2. To remove health differences that result from
    factors such as gender, race, education,
    disability, and location.

  • Risk behaviors are actions that can potentially
    threaten your health or the health of others.
  • Make sure you can recognize a risky behavior
  • Unhealthy diets
  • Drug use
  • Sexual behaviors
  • Physical inactivity
  • Simple things like not wearing a seat belt or
    helmet.
  • Cumulative Risk related risks that increase in
    effect with each added risk. Example Smoking
    and getting sunburns. Its more than one risk
    factor added together.

Abstaining from Risk Behaviors
  • Abstinence avoiding harmful behaviors. Example
    not using drugs or avoiding sexual behaviors.
  • How you behave affects not only yourself but
    others around you.
